The 5 Elements in Traditional Chinese Philosophy relate to fire, earth, metal, water and wood. The 5 elements represent different bodily organs. The philosophy helps to understand the relationship between bodily organs and emotions.
Fire - Boundaries/Open heart/ Passion/ Joy
Earth - Nurture and Nourishment/Needs/Care
Metal - Shame/Guilt/Grief/Worthiness
Water - Trust/Control/Fear/Connection
Wood - Frustration/Stagnation/Anger
Each element has its own challenges and virtues. Often the elements interact with each other, and when in balance, we can experience life in a fulfilled manner. When we are faced with various challenges, our emotional imbalance can sometimes become stuck in our bodies causing various physical problems/clinical symptoms in the body. Understanding the emotional imbalance and how it relates to the energy (Qi) of the 5 elements can help us resolve the root issue. An imbalance in the elements can lead to disruptions with relating to others which can in turn cause a decreased quality of life. Understanding the imbalance in the cycle or individual elements can help to address the emotional drive behind the inability or need/want to participate in various activities.
